Beijing 2008
Spectacular launch of World Mind Sports Games
ITALY WINS OPEN TITLE WHILE NORWAY PREVAILS IN YOUTH AND OVERALL

With some 2,000 players representing 92 countries, bridge dominated the first edition of the World Mind Sports Games, held in Beijing, China, 3-18 October 2008. The other sports were chess, draughts, go and xiangqi (chinese chess).

The former 'World Bridge Olympiad' was discontinued to give way to the World Bridge Games within the World Mind Sports Games. This included national teams competitions in several series (open, women, under 28), the World Youth Team Championships (under 26, under 21), under 28 Pairs, under 28 individual and the World Masters Individual (open and women series). Outside of the World Mind Sports Games, the senior series for national teams and the World Transnational Mixed Teams were also held.

Italy was the spectacular winner of the open teams: the fifth time it has won the Vanderbilt Trophy since its inception in 1960. England won the women teams, and Japan the senior teams.

The participation of young players in the World Bridge Games was strongly encouraged. As the result, 110 youth teams from 76 countries gathered to contest the three national team tournaments. A Pairs and an Individual competition followed. Norway was the overall winner of the Games, thanks also to their victory in the Under 28 teams, while Turkey collected two gold medals in the Pairs and the Individual.

In the Senior teams, Japan won their first ever world medal, while Chinese Taipei took the title in the Mixed Teams thanks to 'Yeh Bros'.
